Waiting Room, part 2

Part 1

He was sure that he dozed, but nothing in the room had changed to indicate the passage of time. He closed his eyes again, but no longer felt the gentle tug of unconsciousness.

There was a whoosh as a panel slid open across from him. He jumped out of his seat and ran the three strides to the opposite wall. The woman’s face appeard. “Someone will be with you shortly,” she said, then slammed the window.

“Wait!” He reached the wall and started pounding on it. “Come back! Just give me a time!” After kicking the wall, he turned and picked up his chair and flung it, with a yell.

There was no response. He picked up the chair and set it next to where he thought he remembered the window being.

He leaned forward and let his face fall into his hands. “Or at least let me go home.”

A panel opened in the middle of the floor and the room began to fill with water.

Um…yes, this is research

This week features “mandatory overtime”, which can also be known as “the testing department officially becoming the only department at the company with a sense of accountability.” It’s good to be a part of positive change; it sucks to be the forerunners of positive change.

That doesn’t mean I don’t have time to write, though, but for today I’m going to be reading. I picked up a copy of Asimov’s over the weekend, and I’m dying to take a peek at it. I listen to a podcast every week that I am always raving about, and I noticed that one of the guys has a story in this issue. I’ve never read anything of his, but since I started listening, I’ve been dying to see if he is as good of a writer as he is a writing coach. Also, I hear he’s kind of a big deal. So, there you have it.

Are any of you familiar with Brandon Sanderson’s work?

As you can see (unless you’re using RSS), the new theme is now live. Sweet. Let me know if you see any problems anywhere… even though my job is to test software, it’s possible that I missed something.

The wife is going to whip me up a header, once the dog is back to full strength. In the meantime…meh, good enough. I’ll see what it looks like on a computer other than my laptop and make any necessary adjustments.

Yes, I mostly just tweaked the one I was using before… it was a good layout! Anyway, take it easy.

UPDATE:: New header image! Isn’t it awesome? The wife does great work.

Well I had fun yesterday

Posted in process on September 25th, 2008 by stanmanx

Due to an unforseen sickness in the family, I wound up taking an additional vacation day yesterday. That gave me a great opportunity to sit and write. It was kind of funny, actually, because it’s been a while since I’ve had that much uninterrupted time to not-do a million other things I shouldbedoing. I kind of forgot how to write.

The Aftermath

Posted in fiction on September 24th, 2008 by stanmanx

Today I decided to screw around with some back story for something else I’m working on. It’s not necessarily canon, though, just an experiment with the world.

The only light in the cramped room came from a cracked lumiorb in the ashes of the fireplace. Three of the four robed occupants were seated around a scorched table, while the fourth stood and stared out the window.
